M.Ed:- Research Time!

I now need to start thinking about my research: what to focus on? It’s much harder than it seems. Initially I thought I’d like to do something on the PRD process and how it is perceived. Actually nailing the questions for that was hard and it seemed to carry a political dimension in the light of the upcoming “re-accreditation” or “professional update” ( or whatever the GTCS decide to call it) agenda, which I don’t think I’m ready to take on .
So my thoughts turned to Learning Rounds. This is an amazingly simple system of classroom observation whereby groups of teachers discuss an area for observation- it could be use of technology, or questioning, or lesson starters, or anything they would like to loook at. They observe and then discuss what they saw. No value judgements are made – the discussion always uses the descriptive voice, and feedback is not given to the teacher involved in the observed class, because he/she is not the focus of the observation. This is a hard one to get over, but crucial to the process. Learning Rounds are CPD for the teachers doing the observing; not an evaluation of the teacher being observed. That subtle realignment makes all the difference, and lends Learning Rounds real capacity to transform practice within a school. We all now know that differences within schools are greater than differences between schools; and we can also imagine how great a school could be if every teacher was as good as the best teacher in that school. I think Learning Rounds has a really important role to play in all this and that’s why I am planning to do some research into it. I’m going to do a brainstorming session with my colleagues to see if we can start shaping up some questions and will take it from there.
